چکیده

By T. H. J. HUISMAN, A. M. Dozy, B. E. HORTON AND J. B. WILsON T HE EXISTENCE of variants of normal human fetal hemoglobin ( HbFor a2y2 ) has been suggested in different reports in the literature. Variants of fetal hemoglobin with abnormal a-polypeptide chains have been described5 ”5 and some are well characterized.’0 Only one abnormality, namely the electrophoretically fast moving hemoglobin variant Hb F oma, has been identified as being composed of normal a-chains and abnormal y-chains.’3 Other possible variants include Hh-Alexandra,2’#{176}”6 the fetal hemoglobin of the Texas type12 and Hb-Cypnis I; these hemoglobin types, however, are too inadequately characterized to be classified definitely under 1 of these 2 groups of Hh-F variants. In this paper we will report studies of an abnormal hemoglobin fraction ( designated as Hb WTarren ) which was found to be present in the cord blood sample cf a healthy Negro newborn. The isolated hemoglobin was characterized by various analytical procedures and was found to be composed of normal a-polypeptide chains and abnormal y-polypeptide chains.

The Effect of Amelioration of Anemia on the Synthesis of Fetal Hemoglobin in Sickle Cell Anemia.

By L. JUDEN REED, THOMAS B. BRADLEY, JR. AND HEu N M. RANNEY F ETAL HEMOGLOBIN, a tetramer of 2a and 2y polypeptide chains, constitutes the major hemoglobin component in newborn infants. During the first 6 months of extra-uterine life, the synthesis of y chains declines as chain synthesis increases. Adult Hb A, a tetramer of 2a and 2$ polypeptide chain accounts for over 95 per cent of the hemog...

On the chemical abnormality of Hb "Alexandra", a fetal hemoglobin variant.

H UMAN FETAL HEMOGLOBIN consists of two unlike pairs of polypeptide chains, i.e., a2y2. While the detection of an a-chain variant may not present serious difficulties, since the abnormal fetal hemoglobin will be replaced by the adult type, the y-chain variants are transitory and their study is limited by time, shortage of blood and their rarity. Identification of the y-chain anomaly has been po...

Hemoglobin D is the Commonest Hemoglobinopathy in the North of Iran

Abstract         Background and Objective: Normal hemoglobin (Hb) is formed of a heme group and a protein group known as globin. Globin is made of four polypeptide chains and in hemoglobinopathies, the structure of one of these four polypeptide chain becomes abnormal. Cellulose acetate method is a common way to differentiate haemoglobinopathies. Inabilit...

Rapid differentiation of polypeptide chains of hemoglobin by cellulose acetate electrophoresis of hemolylsates.

I DENTIFICATION of the abnormal polypeptide chain of a hemoglobin ( Hb ) variant is often useful in connection with structural analyses and Chernoff and Pettit’ have recently improved on existing methods for this purpose by using starch gel electrophoresis of globin in urea barbital buffer. Izzo2 used this same buffer for electrophoresis of globin on cellulose acetate. Ohba et al.3 have propose...
